With the Tsunami disaster it was felt that ability to swim would have saved a large number of lives and training the children in swimming was considered as necessity. As a result aswimming pool located in front of Light House Hotel in Galle was declared open on 29th June 2008 by Julian Bolling, one of the greatest swimmers produced in Sri Lanka. The Van Der Horst family, the owners of Holleman BV of Santpoort of The Netherlands donated part of the funds through Velsen Helps Galle to NAAL for the construction of the pool in memory of their son. The Light House Hotel of the Jetwing Group donated the land for the pool and a trusted was formed to manage and maintains the pool. The balance money came from Jeffry Dobs of “Adopt Sri Lanka” and another NGO based in UK. The swimming instructor underwent a training program in Holland recently, and today a large numbers of students in Galle are using this pool to learn swimming.
