NAAL, with the help of SOS Velsen, donated 702concrete compost bins to the Municipal Council of Matara. On 10 October 2010 the first set of bins were handed over to the Mayor in the presence of a large number of recipients at a function held in Nupe, Matara. The Mayor, Municipal Council members, Chairperson of Isadeen town Citizen’s Committee, who is also the Executive Director of “Rural Friends” who manufactured the concrete compost bins were present.The project helped the Municipal Council to reduce the volume of solid waste transported by composting bio degradable waste in to compost at their homes and promote people to use compost in their home gardens.
As a follow- up of the project a survey to obtain information from the recipients of compost bins was done and a summary report was sent to the donor. Lessons learnt from the project will be useful for future projects.
In December 2010 the balance set of compostbins were handed to the Mayor by the Delegation from Velsen comprising Mr Guus Hartendorf (Chairman SOS Velsen), Mr Klass Van Slooten (Secretary SOS Velsen) and two other Board Members along with NAAL executive committee members. The quality of the compost bins supplied has been certifiedby the municipal engineers. Total project cost was LKR 1,898,431/56.
