In 2009 NAAL completed and handed over its one of the largest development projects with the construction of 38 two-storied houses for the Tsunami affected persons of Galle Municipality. Although there were several other housing schemes that were opened to settle the Tsunami victims in Galle District, Eththiligoda Housing Scheme is considered as a unique scheme. It was completed by NAAL with a donation of LKR 82 million from Velsen Helps Galle (VHE) in The Netherlands. Within the limited land extent of 2.2 ha, part of which was filled due to water logging, 38 housing units consisting of two-storied twin houses were built with all necessary facilities. The Tsunami victims were selected by the District Secretary as a special category of affected persons belonging to employees of both state and private sector whose houses were completely destroyed but who could not get alternate accommodation for a long time.
Subsequently a small children’s park and a community centre was also built for the benefit of the beneficiaries of the housing scheme.
