Karapitiya Hospital being the main hospital in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka received assistance from the city of Velsen which implemented several projects to serve the public more efficiently. The hospital encountered the problem of storing liquid Oxygen supply within the premises and Velsen through NAAL installed a liquid Oxygen system for which Ceylon Oxygen Company supplies this important item to the doorstep and also maintain the system. The hospital also faced the problem of supplying Oxygen to the Emergency Treatment unit and Trauma Ward due to its distant location from the Oxygen tank. Again Velsen provided the necessary funds to lay a pipe line to solve the problem. The next project was to construction of a Cool Room to store pharmaceuticals. It was noted that the pharmaceuticals were stored in refrigerators kept in a room which was not an accepted method of storing pharmaceuticals.
Another valuable project of Velsen was providing a Mobile Blood Bank to the Hospital which increased the collection of blood as it reaches the door step of the donors. The blood collection program was remarkably successful with this mobile unit.
